‘Cancer is not a full stop’
A former councillor has spoken openly about his battle with cancer. Phil Cartwright, who represented Harbour ward in Whitstable until 2014, has had an operation to remove a growth from his bowel and is to undergo chemotherapy. Speaking to Gazette writer Chris Stone, he said: “I’m not brave, just too busy getting fit and ready for the chemotherapy to work. Too often people look on cancer as a full stop. It’s not. Thanks to modern medicine it’s hardly a comma in a lot of cases today.” Mr Cartwright quit Labour with fellow councillor John Wratten amid a bitter row with his local party after it deselected them.
