additional route into Canterbury but only an alternative access road into the Wincheap service area, to relieve the chronic congestion at the Wincheap roundabout on Rheims Way.

As such the slip road only needs to join the roundabout at the bottom of Ten Perch Road, from where it can serve the park and ride, the Wincheap retail areas, the industrial estate via Boundary and Cotton Road, and the A28 to Ashford.

If the slip road was started further back near the bridge over the Stour where there is already a lay-by, it would need to be on a short viaduct, which is ideal as it would allow the park and ride to be enlarged beneath it, towards the river.

As Highways England suggests the Ten Perch road roundabout would need to be enlarged and preferably hollowed out in the centre, so subways could be constructed under the road to take the existing footpath safely to the retail parks and the Park and Ride.

It only remains for new the slip road to be signposted: Wincheap Services, Canterbury Park and Ride and A28 Ashford. The signpost at the slip road at the start of the A2 bypass should only direct traffic into Canterbury and the A28 Sturry, while indicating the other connections are accessed further on at the new slip road.
