Residents share their Concerns

-

Concerned neighbours living close to Tonford Lane are calling for a warning system to be installed at the crossing.

Father-of-two Kieron Bain, of Ashford Road, said: “I don’t know how much it would cost, but there must be some sort of system they could install that triggers an alarm when trains are coming.

“It is a dangerous crossing and I think twice when using it. A basic lighting system would be quite helpful.”

Grandmother-of-three Susan Flay, who has lived in Tonford Lane for 20 years, added: “My husband has complained before because the trees overhang and it makes it difficult to see.

“It is an accident waiting to happen if your sight is restricted, it needs constantly looking at.

“A footbridge over any part of the railway line would be a good idea.”

Merrilyn Lee, of Sturry Road, regularly uses the crossing to visit her son in Tonford Lane.

“It would be handy to have something to let people know what is coming,” she said.

“In this day and age, they must be able to do something to make people aware as you hardly have any time at all to get your wits about you.”

Hassall Reach resident Len Pottle, 83, agreed, saying neighbours have been trying for years to get a warning system installed.

Network Rail spokesman Russell Spink said: “The crossing is compliant with all current standards and there are no immediate plans to make any changes at the crossing.

“In recent years there has been work to improve both crossing approaches and new gates and fencing have been installed.

“Anti-trespass guards are also fitted at the crossing.”
