Hanagan aiming to make Beijing

Winter sports

-

Canterbury athlete Rachel Hanagan has set her sights on the Beijing Winter Olympics after being selected to join the GB skeleton talent squad.

The former Invicta East Kent AC youngster was part of Canterbury High School’s elite sports development programme before going on to study sports and exercise science at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Now 25, Hanagan’s selection came through the UK Sport talent identification campaign Discover Your Gold and means she will be relocating from Canterbury to Bath in June to start her training towards Beijing 2022 and the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Hanagan – who was prevented from announcing her selection in March until now– said: “I was so excited when I took the call from British Skeleton. The difficult part has been keeping it quiet as I wanted to tell everyone.”

The former under-17 triple jump champion won the UK School Games gold in 2008 and was ranked No.1 in the UK for her age before suffered a string of injuries.

It was while attending a sports science course at Loughborough University with the English Institute of Sport that she encountered Discover Your Gold – aimed at identifying athletes with the potential to become future champions. Hanagan was 5-1-14-2, Walsh 3-1-16-0, Morgan 1.4-0-4-1. Hayes won by 79 runs. Whitstable v HSBC

She said: “I didn’t expect to get past the first stage of the testing but when I got through each stage. I began to think that I could do it.”

While Hanagan trains at the Canterbury High campus, she has had the chance to train at the skeleton push-start track at the University of Bath, where Sochi 2014 gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold, from Kent, also trained.

Full-time training officially begins in July and from October Hanagan will travel to ice tracks around the world to extend her training.
