BOWLS ROUND-UP: BARHAM ENJOY WHITEWASH IN FRIENDLY WIN WHILE CANTERBURY HAVE MIXED FORTUNES IN NATIONAL EVENTS

Barham were in good form at home to Dover in a friendly winning all five triples on the way to a 47-shot win (95-48).

Eira Osborne, Mike Hurlock and Phil Cross (23-7) had the best win, closely followed by Sian Grayson, Kim Curtis and Brian White (21-8).

Eric Marsh, Hazel Hatton and Ray Hatton won 19-10, Colin Elderson, Julie Cross and Glyn Hicks 18-13 and Dennis Rose, Richard Grayson and Damian Conroy 14-10.

Playing away to Charing on Saturday in another friendly, Barham won just one of thre five triples, going down 90-59.

Lynda Jenner, Richard Grayson and David Hatton had their sole success, 17-9. Other rinks Sian Grayson, Selwyn Lewis,colin Smith lost 24-13; Dennis Rose, Rita Smith, Ralph Watts lost 20-12; Eric Hearn, Rita Cleaver, Gerry Ferrett lost 19-9; Colin Elderson, Linda Lewis, Glyn Hicks lost 18-8. Milton Regis, losing on all but one rink and by 99 shots overall. Milton Regis 147 Canterbury 48 Yvonne Kampa, Maj Lloyd, Kieth Brooks lost 26-6; Win Brooks, John Cananur, Michael Hutchinson lost 30-6; Keith Wright, Mike Doyle, June Baker lost 18-11; Duncan Ellis, Kay Lloyd, Dick Mortley lost 41-4; Trevor Dilworth, Val Lundin, Bernard Woodhams won 15-10; Brian Wheeler, Cyril Hutchins, Sue Close lost 22-6.

The points were shared four apiece in the Forest of Blean League match against Herne Bay.

Although Canterbury narrowly lost on four rinks, they won by eight shots overall. Canterbury 99 Herne Bay 91 Dave Charlton, Ian Burton, Steve Wells won 19-16; Jo Vandapeer, Alan Marsh, Jeff Vane won 23-10; Chris Dawson, John King, Malcolm Nicholson lost 16-15; Dave Rickard, Roger Blissett, Alan Cornfoot won 18-12; Bryan Nicholson, Colin Strouts, Dave Todd lost 14-13; Damien Hone, Mike Talbot, Tony Dobson lost 20-14.

Canterbury C lost to Aylesham in the National Two Fours competitio­n, losing on both rinks and by eight shots overall. Canterbury 31 Aylesham 39 Brian Wheeler, Mervin Gulvin, Dave Swann, Ian Burton lost 19-17; Darren Ellis, Ian Mitchell, Dave Charlton, Brian Nicholson lost 20-16.

The National Top Club again against Aylesham had different fortunes for Canterbury B who won all five games.

Two-wood singles led the way when Michael Hutchinson fought back from 11-4 down to level at 13-13 then won the extra end.

Triples followed when Damien Hone, Bryan Nicholson and Ian Burton won 24-14. Pairs was conceded by Aylesham after the 18th end with the score 26-9 while the four-wood singles was also conceded with John King winning 18-7.

Fours was also conceded after 16 ends at 21-9 to Brian Wheeler,tom Nelson, Dave Swann, Dave Charlton. Trevor Hall, Malcolm Scott, Brian Reynolds won 25-14; Peter Boeg, Norman Toby, Garth Coates won 13-11; Phil Gardiner, Derek Gann, Brian Watson drew 13-13; Tony Petts, Paul Browning, Brian Gentle lost 22-21; Ray Mcdonald, Chris Twyman, Alan Reid lost 17-16.

Whitstable lost on just two of the six rinks at home to Broadstair­s and prevailed by 21 shots overall. Whitstable shared the rinks in a friendly at home to North East Kent Police on Thursday but won by eight shots overall. Whitstable 75 North East Kent Police 67 Bob Davey, Ken Gillmore, Garth Coates won 23-7; Brian Gentle, John Goodenough, Shirley Whitehand won 17-15; Trevor Hall, Jean Harman, Brian Reynolds lost 23-19; Peter Boeg, David Lane, Rosemary Field lost 22-16. their summer season with a 108-86 defeat at Swale.

Linda Snook, Colin Chapman, Brian Gambrill (17-13) and Maurice Odell, Mo Gray and Sue Swan (18-17) were their two winning rinks. Bay were only able to win one triple in the East Kent Mixed Triples League game at Minster with one other triple tied. This meant that Bay only picked up one and a half of the eight available points.
