Evans sprints to gold

Invicta East Kent AC athletes collected more than a dozen medals in a strong showing at the Kent Championsh­ips at Ashford over the weekend.

Louise Evans cruised to gold in the under-17 200m on Saturday – adding to her county indoor 200m title – while Djamilla Nkeurewem missed out on a medal podium by an agonising tenth of a second while Hannah Scrivens was fifth in a new PB.

An under-the-weather Evans was pipped to gold on the line in the 300m the following day.

On Sunday, Lauren Macey won the 80m hurdles in a time of 12.38 – just four hundredths outside her PB – to add to her fourth in the 300m hurdles the previous day (49.77secs).

Multi- eventer Douglas Noel finished fourth in the under-17 long jump with a leap of 5.97 but won the discus with a superb PB throw of 41.58m – 4m better than his previous best.

Matthew Stonier was pipped to gold in a photo finish in the under17 1,500m.

His time of 4.17.63 was seven seconds quicker than he had ever run before but was only good enough for silver, with Charlie Brisley claiming bronze in 4.19.33.

Marcus Etheridge and Joe Griffiths narrowly missed out on qualificat­ion for the final.

The following day, Stonier had to settle for fifth in the 800m with Cole Gibbens in fourth, although Griffiths missed out on the final.

Oscar Parrick led the under-15 race from start to finish to claim gold in a big PB time of 2.05.61.

Parrick finished third in the under-15 1,500m the previous day with a new PB time of 4.24.87. Sam Newson finished eighth.

Maddison Sawyer was fifth in the 800m final in 2.28.70 with Issy Harding seventh in a new PB of 2.30.62.Freya Lee was just outside her PB in 2.34.97.

In the senior women’s category, Gabija Rasiukevic­iute finished second with a time of 2.28.93.

Alexandra Millard pushed hard but had to settle for silver in the under-17 1,500m though Rasiukevic­iute added gold to her silver from the previous day with a PB time of 5.08.02.

In the under-15 age group, Jildou Chappell and Issy Harding took part while Harding also leapt to a new high jump PB of 1.50m.

Under-15 Luke Mellor won silver in the high jump with a jump of 1.60m while Holly Fielder took silver in the under-20 long jump with a leap of 4.71m. Jasmine Harding was fifth with a new PB before contesting the javelin final.

Emily Cartledge was runner-up in the senior women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.60m.

Korede Awe won his under-20 100m heat, beating the athlete who is currently ranked fifth in the country with a time of 11.16 but was disqualifi­ed for a false start in the final, in which Max Heavens took fifth in 11.9secs.

The following day, Awe was overhauled in the final stages of the 200m to finish third in a new PB of 22.68secs. Henry Finch was sixth in the under-15 final in a PB time of 26.74, almost a second faster than he ran in the heats. Finch finished seventh in the 100m final the previous day.

Poppy Collins picked up bronze in the under-20 400m with a new PB of 58.46 with Holly Fielder sixth.

Imogen Davis missed out on the place in the under-15 100m final and also competed in the shot.

Nkeurewem was just two hundreths away from a place in the under-17 final though Scrivens made the final and finished fifth.

Barnaby Dougal produced a storming finish to claim fourth in the 400m final in a new PB of 54.57.

Abel Tsegay missed the championsh­ips to prepare for the world 10,000m trials this weekend.
