An array of weird and wonderful characters lined the streets of Wingham as the village welcomed back its scarecrow trail.

The event, which returned after a four-year break, also saw villagers open their gardens to the public.

Organised by the Friends of St Mary’s Church, the day raised £4,500 towards restoring the structure of the building.

Chairman Lynne Conolly said it had been a beautiful day, with masses of people attending.

“The weather was fantastic, people baked hundreds of cakes, there were buskers and an art exhibition,” she said. “All the businesses in the village were massively busy.

“We had 17 open gardens and people could walk around them – there were some big, some small.

“We had 52 scarecrows which people loved. It was brilliant; a real community event.”

The starting point was at the church in Canterbury Road where visitors could pick up a map of the trail.

BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Mark Lane officially started the proceedings on Saturday.

Mrs Conolly added: “This is the third event so far. It’s a huge thing to organise so we’ll probably do it every two years.”
