Binns and Bailey in Vases win

Val Binns and Gillian Bailey triumphed in the Ladies’ Algarve Vases competitio­n at Canterbury Golf Club this week. In a close finish, they were one-up with 45 points from Fran Fearn and Diane Florence, who in turn were one-up from Andra Barney and Sarah Wetherell (43pts). The four ball betterball Stableford competitio­n was first organised in March 1981 by Cynthia Sheppard who was moving with her husband to the Algarve. The latest weekend Medal was won by Sally Tatton (h24) who scored a net 71, pipping runner-up Alyson Wreford (h24) on countback.

Steve Harte led the way in Division A as Chestfield GC held the RNLI Medal competitio­n on Sunday. His net 64 was five clear of runner-up Paul Williamson, with Tom Johnston in third on countback. Martin Izzard was fourth on countback with a net 71 just ahead of Mark Kelk. Brian Mankelow topped Division B on countback after a net 69, with Will Fernynough having to settle for second. Jason Whiting was third with a net 70, one ahead of Mick Dunlop. Pete Thompson was fifth. Lowest gross score was Alex Young’s 74, while there were twos for Tom Johnston, Tony Ford, Chris Broadbent, Andy Lawrie and Tony Lees. On Saturday, the Pro’s Day two-person Texas Scramble Stableford was won by Stuart Redsell and Andy Simpson with 67 points, one ahead of Derrick Clark and Nick Gladstone with Colin and Max Reid in third with 64. Susan Jones won Thursday’s Ladies’ Stableford with 40 points, two ahead of Kay Webber, with Mo Fentiman another point back in third. On Wednesday the Mitrebeens Silver Jubilee Stableford was won by Neal Fowler whose 42 points total was two clear of Anthony Hyne, with Yvonne Philpott a further point back in third. Peter Newman won the Midweek Stableford the same day, carding 39 points to pip James Dengate by a point, with Derrick Clark third on countback.
