Divas riding high to help hospice
Girl power was at its best for Sunday’s Divas on Wheels ride in aid of the Pilgrims Hospice.
More than 220 cyclists from across east Kent saddled up for the annual fundraiser, taking on either 25 or 50-mile routes through the scenic countryside.
The event at the Freewheel Cycling Cafe at Graveney is expected to have collected more than £12,000 for the hospice.
Riders were supported by 35 dedicated volunteers, including experienced ‘bike heroes’ who led small groups and offered roadside repairs and help to anybody in need.
Hospice fundraising manager Deborah Kellond said: “Divas is such a supportive event, with the riders encouraging each other on the way and plenty of help at hand if it’s needed. It’s girl power at it’s best.”
Sarah Martins, senior ward sister at the hospice in Canterbury, was among the riders and took on the 50-mile challenge as part of her 40th birthday bucket list.
She said: “My mum was cared for at the hospice 10 years ago. Having experienced the difference that care makes, I feel very privileged as a Pilgrims nurse to be part of that service.
“It felt really good to take part in this challenge, knowing the funds we have raised will help us continue to be there for the next family that needs us.” Lorraine Neale and Melanie Pickard
Another participant Jill Knell, it’s a charity that’s really impor70, said: “I’ve been cycling since tant to support.” I was 14. For details of Pilgrims
