City club trio secure cup win

Canterbury claimed the Forest of Blean Millennium Cup at Faversham after seeing off the challenge of Whitstable, Boughton, Faversham, Herne Bay and Ashford Town.

Two teams from each club had to play each other with three points for a win, two points for a draw and one extra point for an overall win.

Canterbury’s team of Malcolm Nicholson, Tony Dobson and Alan Cornfoot won all their games while Dave Rickard, Chris Dawson and Dave Todd drew one and won the others.

Canterbury finished top with a fine 33 points with Whitstable in second with 18 which secured their best finish since they won the cup in 2009, thanks to teams of Ray Mcdonald, Alan Reid and Paul Browning plus reserve Gareth Porter and Peter Boeg, Derek Newell and Garth Coates.

In the Ladies Dover League, Canterbury enjoyed another great win against Kearsney. Canterbury 50 Kearsney 27 Sue Mates, Carole Nelson, Sue Blissett won 25-11; Liz Long, Christie Barr, Sue Close won 25-16.

Canterbury lost four of the six rinks in their East Kent Mixed Triples League clash with Kearnsey, although the game finished with the scores level. Canterbury 95 Kearsney 95 Liz Long, Brian Wheeler, Dave Charlton lost 20-16; Wendy Wright, Colin Goldsack, Mervyn Gulvin won 19-12; Tom Nelson, Maureen Dilnot, Dick Mortley lost 18-17; George Long, Jou Burton, Bernard Woodhams lost 19-11; Heather Goldsack, Alan Burnap, Michael Hutchinson lost 15-12; Sheila Holden, Keith Wright, Ian Burton won 20-11.

Canterbury suffered a 22-shot defeat against Ash. Canterbury 66 Ash 88 John Letts, Dave Rickard, Chris Dawson won 16-13; John Smith, Colin Goldsack, Leon King lost 15-12; Tony Lord, Barry Dilnot, Bryan Nicholson lost 22-12; Ian De Pledge, Sam Supple, Bernard Woodhams lost 26-12; Martin Collins, Brian Wheeler, Michael Hutchinson won 14-12.

Canterbury’s men won on all but one rink in a 52-shot win against Deal. Canterbury 129 Deal 77 Keith Wright, Maj Lloyd, Bernard Woodhams won 34-14; Bob Keen, Cyril Hutchins, Mervyn Gulvin lost 22-11; Peter Fawcett, Tim Woods, Ian Burton won 17-14; Michael Doyle, Brian Wheeler, Dave Charlton won 20-9; Barry Jordan, John Cananur, Michael Hutchinson won 17-8; Dean Ellis, Trevor Dilworth, Bryan Nicholson won 30-10.

Canterbury hosted a touring side from Arundel and enjoyed a 41-shot win playing eight mixed fours games. Canterbury 159 Arundel 118 Peter Fawcett, Rosemary Wheeler, Colin Goldsack, Colin Strouts won 31-17; Jill Jenkins, Russell Feast, Junko Lord, Mervyn Gulvin lost 19-15; Peter Beasley, Jenny Wilkinson, Tom Nelson, Sue Close won 24-15; Richard Close, Keith Wright, Val Lundin, Maj Lloyd won 23-15; Jo Vandapeer, Brian Wheeler, June Baker, Mike Talbot won 21-16; Dave Jenkins, Heather Goldsack. Alan Burnap, Bernard Woodhams won 22-14.
