Winner Webber holds off the chasing pack

-

The sun shone for the three ladies’ competitions at Canterbury GC this week.

Jane Webber triumphed in the 36 Hole Salver with excellent net rounds of 69 and 74.

Despite a couple of dropped shots in both front nines, she recovered them after the turn.

It was a close contest as one shot behind, with totals of 144, were June Edney, Alison Kingston and Sarah Wetherell.

Five ladies then came in with totals of 145, Jenny Rutherford, Lizza Berry, Val Binns, Cath Smith and Val Lucas.

The Cardy Salver Stableford was contested by players with 29-36 handicaps.

Pat Askham, who has been a member at Canterbury since 1989, won with 34 points, three clear of Barbara Plews, Jennifer Reed and Sheelagh Smith.

The regular nine-hole competition was won by Wendy French, whose 38 points put her one ahead of Val Sargeant with Sue Kerr in third a further shot back.

Canterbury Ladies are through to the quarter-finals of the annual Bradley Cook competition after a 5-0 victory against Rochester & Cobham on Saturday secured top spot in the qualifying group.

Having beaten the same opponents 3-2 on their own course, Canterbury never looked in trouble, although Jen Rutherford and Amanda Pilbeam had to work harder than their team-mates for their wins against resilient opponents.

Both emerged victorious – Rutherford by 3&2 and Pilbeam 2&1 – and their wins supplemented convincing triumphs for Ali Kingston (6&5), Ali Beck (5&3) and Val Binns (6&5).

Canterbury face Royal Cinque Ports in the quarterfinals.
