The sky’s the limit at wacky bin races
An amazing assortment of decorated and modified wheelie bins lined up for a race that was truly out of this world this year.
Catching the eye was the AngloAmerican space project entry, towed on a double-bin launch trolley, that helped organisers at the Three Horseshoes pub in Hernhill raised a astronomical £3,500 for the Pilgrims Hospice.
It was just one of a dozen topclass entries, some built for speed and others to raise some smiles.
Among the other comedy entries was a lumbering dinosaur doing its best to keep up with the Jurassic Park entry, and a Mafiastyle Codfather team publicising the Shoes’ regular fish and chip six-quid suppers.
A USA Army Jeep made brilliant use of the familiar bin shape, as did the pink painted polka dot rock and roll bin and the hospice’s own out-and-out racer.
The best bin award was the posh shoe and cider creation entered in memory of Ynez Button, from Dunkirk, who died at the hospice in February.
Husband Mark was in the team and the high-heeled shoe special was emblazoned with pictures of Ynez, who worked with many local groups, including the KM.
Fastest was the Three Horseshoes Speed Machine and best fancy dress prize went to the Pink Rock and Roll Girls.
Landlord Buster Mcdonnell said: “It was brilliant afternoon with a brilliant result for the hospice, which once again was the real winner. It was so touching to see the tribute to Ynez, which brings home to everyone just what the hospice does and why it is so important to us all.
“Although we have £3,500 so far, there is still money coming in so we hope to make a really useful donation.”
