RELOCATION IS HARD TARGET FOR SHOOTERS

-

The sale of Greenfields’ land in Sturry Hill will bring to an end the site’s 70 years as shooting grounds.

Two hundred enthusiasts a week still enjoy the pastime, but company owner Tim Greenfield says it is proving difficult to find an alternative location for the business.

“We haven’t heard anything in terms of timescale from the developer and will just keep going as long as we can,” he said. “We have had a sniff around at possible other locations locally, but it is not easy with this kind of operation because of the shot fallout and noise. You really need around 75 acres.

“I’m not optimistic we will find something but it may be that we just continue to run a gun shop in the area.”

Mr Greenfield’s grandfather, Harold Greenfield, first bought a gun shop in Upper Bridge Street, Canterbury, in 1926.

The shop later closed and the business was transferred to the Sturry site in 2002.
