Strategy to boost public transport and walking

-

The council’s transport strategy contains plans to reduce car use and increase the use of public transport and more cycling and walking.

It wants to encourage people to work from home more often or to car share when making journeys to work.

The strategy also contains proposals for a number of new roads – including the proposed slip-road off the A2 to the A28 at Wincheap, a Sturry relief road which takes traffic off the A291 and onto the A28 without going through the middle of the village and a link between the A257 through Howe Barracks to Chaucer Road by Canterbury Crown Court and the city council offices.

Proposing the formal adoption of the transport strategy, council leader Simon Cook said: “It is clear that we received conflicting notes from local people about what they want from transport.

“What we have tried to do is steer a middle way in the best tradition of British politics. We have got to work together for the betterment of the district.”

The council formally agreed to adopt the transport strategy by a vote of 28 to seven. Visit www.canterbury.gov.uk to read it.
