The government wants a million new homes to be built in the UK by 2020 – more than 2,500 for each planning authority. When it came to a vote, most of the councillors waved the plan through, with 29 in favour, four against and three abstentions.
With it in place, people now await the arrival of the bulldozers and cranes and men in hard hats to begin the process of transforming the district.
