The government wants a million new homes to be built in the UK by 2020 – more than 2,500 for each planning authority. When it came to a vote, most of the councillor­s waved the plan through, with 29 in favour, four against and three abstention­s.

With it in place, people now await the arrival of the bulldozers and cranes and men in hard hats to begin the process of transformi­ng the district.
