Dean welcomes pilgrims to city
A pair of powerful bulls led a pilgrimage with a difference through the city centre on Monday.
The Dean of Canterbury Cathedral joined monks from the Hare Krishna movement as they paraded from the Buttermarket.
The movement dates back more than 5,000 years and follows ancient teachings of yoga with roots in the Vedic culture of India.
Ograniser Mantra Chaitanya said: “This was no ordinary pilgrimage as, for the very first time in history, the pilgrims were a colourful group of young Hare Krishna monks leading a lively and uplifting procession.
“It had music, food, philosophy and dance, and the temple on wheels was pulled by two fully grown, working bullocks.
“Coupling Canterbury’s progressive reputation with its well-known history as a world- Dean of Canterbury, the Very Rev Dr Richard Willis, greets Swami Mahavisnu and the two bulls
famous pilgrimage site, it was a living example of how simple, traditional lifestyle choices based on genuine spiritual values can
provide much needed answers to 21st century problems.”
The pilgrimage will arrive in Folkestone tomorrow (Friday).
