A superb season for Herne Bay United Roller Hockey & Skating Club’s artistic section finished on a high as a squad of 14 travelled to the Meridian roller dance competitions in Orpington on Sunday.

The club took eight newcomers and their achievements were outstanding.

The club entered categories including newcomers’ routine, newcomers’ solo dance, nonmedallist solo dance, elementary solo dance, bronze solo dance, newcomers’ and non-medallist solo dance teams and nonmedallist duo teams.

The club came away with 18 medals, five of them gold with nine silvers and four bronzes.

Nearly half of the squad won at least one medal with eight top-five finishes and 13 in the top-10, to the delight of the artistic coaching team of Kym Marsh, Melanie Harwin and Mike Cair.

The new season gets under way in September and from September 8 anyone interested in having a go at skating can attend Social Session at the Bay Sports Arena on Fridays from 7-9pm.

There are basic skills skating lessons for members on Saturdays from 8.30am to 9am from the following day.

More information can be found at www.hernebayunited.co.uk or from the club’s Facebook page.

Herne Bay RHC are hoping for support from local businesses and the public to help them fulfil their dream of representing England in the Eurohockey Cup in Barcelona in October.

The cost for the under-15s to take their place in the top-16 teams from across Europe is in the region of £600 per player and as well as coming up with fundraising initiatives, the club are hoping to attract sponsorship to help meet the costs.

A club spokesman said: “Any help would be gratefully received as we have single parents and large families and it would be a shame if the boys could not represent their country due to lack of funds.”

For more information or to offer support, email hbrhcsec@ btinternet.com Wingham rider Carl Mitchell competed at Brands Hatch at the weekend in the highly competitive MRO Minitwin Championship. After a troubled Saturday that saw an engine blow up, he salvaged the weekend on Sunday with ninth, eighth and sixth-placed finishes. Mitchell said: “Despite the blow up I’m happy with the weekend but I plan to make further progress as the season goes on.” The Brands ride follows his World Supersport 300 wildcard ride at Imola in May and a promising meeting at Donington last month. Mitchell has also been offered a British Superbike Motorstar ride for next season and is keen to talk to anyone interested in potential sponsorship.
