University’s new leader is welcomed
The University of Kent has officially welcomed its new vicechancellor – at a “uniquely challenging time” for higher education.
Karen Cox formally took up the post on Tuesday and replaces Dane Julia Goodfellow, who has retired after 10 years at the helm.
Sir David Warren, chairman of the University’s Council, said: “I am delighted to welcome Professor Cox to the university.
“It is a uniquely challenging time for the higher education sector as we adapt ourselves to the new legislative framework in the Higher Education and Research Act, and confront the implications of leaving the European Union.
“Kent is very well positioned to deal with the new environment, and Prof Cox brings to us not only a very distinguished academic and management record from her long experience, but a strong reputation as an inspirational leader.
“I am looking forward enormously to working with her, as I know are all the members of the council.”
Prof Cox is an expert in cancer and palliative care, a registered nurse and comes to Kent from the University of Nottingham, where she was deputy vicechancellor.
“I am proud to be leading such an outstanding institution as the University of Kent,” she said.
“I would like to thank my predecessor Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow for her exceptional legacy. Under her leadership, the university has gone from strength to strength.
“I look forward to working with staff, students and alumni.”
Prof Cox’s academic and research interests include patients’ and families’ experiences of cancer clinical trial involvement and decision-making in palliative care.
