A former police officer appeared in the dock this week accused of sexually abusing a young girl.

Colin Wraight, 66, of St Margaret’s Street, Canterbury, has denied 12 counts of indecent assault and another of possessing child sex images.

His trial at Canterbury Crown Court started this week and heard how his accuser sketched part of a hand and a pair of handcuffs as she made the allegations to her mum.

When detectives raided the home of Wraight they discovered sets of handcuffs, a police truncheon and a vibrator, together with other sex toys and illegal child images on his computer.

Vivian Walters, prosecuting, said the child told her mother she wanted to talk to police but initially did not want to say why “because she didn’t want to make her mum sad”.

The prosecutor added: “It was suggested she write it down and she wrote two notes. The first one included little pictures of cuffs. She also claimed Wraight made a video but she made him delete it.”

The court heard the child claimed Wraight had used a bat “like police did in the old days instead of guns”, and had threatened to handcuff her to the bed.

Wraight served with Kent Police in Ashford, Ramgsate and Whitstable.

He told the jury he had never sexually assaulted the victim.

He was asked if he had any idea why the allegations had been made and replied: “I have no idea.”

The trial continues.
