BOWLS: CANTERBURY’S CORNFOOT WINS PLACE IN NATIONALS WHILE BAY PROGESS TO COX CUP DIVISIONAL FINAL

Herne Bay progressed to the Divisional semi- final of the Kent County Cox Cup with a remarkable comeback against Ashford Rail.

With one rink played at home and one away, Bay were six shots adrift starting the 21st and final end.

However, the away rink of Terry Kelly, Shaun Woolford, Paul Woolford and Grant Allen picked up a four to win 24-19 and the home rink of Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly also picked up a four and although they lost 21-18, it was enough to give Bay an overall victory.

Bay picked up seven of the eight available points in their Forest of Blean League game with Ashford Town, winning four of the five triples and by 45 shots overall. Herne Bay 102 Ashford Town 57 Bob Baldwin, Stuart Emert, Grant Allen won 27-9; David Knight, Bob Day, Brian Gisby won 17-11; Richie Callanan, Roy Chillingwo­rth, Jim Watson lost 19-15; Len Brown, Paul Evans, Brian Dennis won 26-6; Colin Hadlow, Ray Chipperfie­ld, Bill Robb won 17-12.

In the East Kent Mixed Triples League, Bay won five of the six triples against Minster and by 38 shots in total. Herne Bay 112 Minster 74 Colin Hadlow, David Knight, Ellen Foster won 15-12; Cath Watson, Edie Nicholls, Colin Holder lost 20-9; Mary Watson, Paul Evans, Brian Gisby won 19-14; Sylvia Sweeting, Joyce Whitlock, Jim Watson won 22-8; Eunice Holder, Tony Rowson, Stuart Emert won 21-14; Lyn Phillips, Ray Chipperfie­ld, Bill Robb won 26-6.

Bay won by 57 shots in their EKMTL game against Faversham after wins on four of the six triples. Herne Bay 135 Faversham 78 Colin Hadlow, David Knight, Ellen Foster won 35-10; Mary Watson, Paul Evans, Brian Dennis drew 16-16; Edie Nicholls, Tony Rowson, Stuart Emert won 21-15; Cath Watson, Colin Holder, Jim Watson lost 22-15; Dawn Harris, Eunice Holder, Tony Bishop won 21-9; Lyn Phillips, Ray Chipperfie­ld, Bill Robb won 27-6.

Bay did, however, only win two of the six rinks played against Borough of Croydon and went down by 39 shots. Bay avoided the heavy rain when playing at Winget near Strood on Saturday and won by 19 shots after the six rinks were split. Winget 99 Herne Bay 118 Sam Hardy, Paul Green, Russell Cooper, Vicky Lewis lost 21-13; Pat Knight, Alan Jordan, Chris Adams, Terry Kelly won 24-12; Alfie Lewis, Dave Stuart, Lyn Phillips, Bill Robb lost 22-16; Jeanette Saunders, Martin Maguire, John Phillips, Alan Kent lost 22-15; Linda Green, Rod Stevens, Dawn Harris, Jim Watson won 24-8; Peter Tavener, Pauline Hougham, Jim Covill, Ellen Foster won 26-14. National Finals in Lemington Spa after another win in the over55 singles competitio­n, beating Ron Sidney, of Horton Kirby, 21-14.

After an 18-shot defeat at home to Boughton, Canterbury need three points from the final game of the Forest of Blean League season against Ashford Town to reclaim their title. Canterbury 94 Boughton 112 Chris Dawson, John King, Malcolm Nicholson won 30-6; Dave Rickard, Roger Blissett, Alan Cornfoot lost 21-10; Dave Swann, Mike Talbot, Tony Dobson won 21–20; Tom Nelson, Ian Burton, Jeff Vane lost 19-16; Brian Wheeler, Mervyn Gulvin, Mick Fisher lost 29-7; Bryan Nicholson, Dave Charlton, Dave Todd lost 17-10.

Canterbury’s men enjoyed a six- shot success against Tilmanston­e in the Dover League to claim eight of the available 12 points. Canterbury 69 Tilmanston­e 63 Cyril Hutchins, Mike Doyle, Bryan Nicholson lost 17-16; Keith Wright, Bob Keen, Colin Goldsack lost 21-18; Brian Wheeler, Ian Smith, Ian Burton won 17–13; Darren Ellis, Ian Mitchell, Mervyn Gulvin won 18-12.

In the Ladies Dover League, Canterbury played Betteshang­er and won overall by 18 shots. Canterbury 36 Betteshang­er 18 Home:m. Mcconomy, S Mates, S. Blissett. Away: L. Long, S Close, K. Walker.

The Ladies also lost to Victoria Park by seven shots. Victoria Park 56 Canterbury 49 Chrissie Barr, Ross Cheeseman, June Baker lost 22-11; Win Brooks, Joy Burton, Sue Close lost 18-17; Christiane De Weduwe, Rosemary Wheeler, Sue Mates won 21-16.

Whitstable claimed five of the eight Forest of Blean League points on offer after a six-shot win over Faversham. Whitstable lost by 26 shots at home to Southend & District BC who won four of the seven rinks played. Milton Regis won by 21 shots at the Castle Green on Thursday after winning four of the six rinks played. Faversham ladies, playing triples against Herne Bay,won 58-50 but there was defeat for the men in a Forest of Blean Triples League game at Whitstable where they lost 94-88.
