New format proves a success
Canterbury ladies
Canterbury Ladies’ Summer Meeting attracted a field of 48 ladies, almost twice as many entries as a year ago.
Numbers had dwindled in recent years as many found the day too long, with two competitions, either side of a lunch, and a dinner following the competition.
This year, lady captain Marianne Disneur opted for an 18-hole medal with a shotgun start and the new format proved much more popular.
Winner of the Summer Rose Bowl, introduced by Ann White in 1991, was Diane Florence, who had a phenomenal round that included six pars off her handicap of 26.
Despite scoring an 11 on the 17th, she carded a net 68, for which she incurred a three-stroke reduction to 23 and a further two-shot cut for exceptional scoring seeing her end the day with a handicap of 21.
Maxine Field (h24) was two shots behind Florence in Division 2 with Jean Johnson (h29) in third with a 71 and 27-handicapper Lesley Pearson a shot back in fourth.
Judith Jefferson’s excellent net 70 earned her victory in a close Division 1.
Val Lucas (h21) was a shot back with six-handicapper Alison Kingston just behind and Jenny Rutherford (h12) in fourth with 72.
Other results: Best front nine – Division 1, Jane Webber; Division 2, Wendy Richards; best back nine – Division 1, Alyson Wreford; Division 2, Dorothy Lloyd Hughes.
Longest drive – Division 1, Jenny Rutherford; Division 2, Diane Florence.
Nearest the pin on eighth – Jane Webber.
Persistency Prize – Division 1, Andra Barney; Division 2, Sheila Smith.
The day raised £235 for the Lady Captain’s Charity, the Children’s Assessment Centre at Kent & Canterbury Hospital.
