Pub conversion plans rejected
Controversial plans to transform a once successful village pub into ground floor bedsits have been refused.
Developers wanted to convert Chartham’s disused George Inn in Shalmsford Street into five single-bed homes but their plans – which would retain the existing first-floor accommodation – have been thrown out by the council, with officers criticising the design.
Architect Mervyn Gulvin had argued said: “The pub is in disuse, the applicant bought the premises in that state.
“The applicants wish to convert the existing property to entirely residential use and provide more dwelling units.
“This offers a more sustainable approach to retention of the building and to providing smaller household units.”
But leaders at Chartham parish council voiced their opposition, saying they would like to see the pub reopen.
A spokesman said: “We were disappointed that another local amenity is lost.
“We were concerned about the change of use to dwelling units as they appear to be cramped units and will be used as just a turnaround of tenants.”
Planning officer Hannah Rawson criticised the scheme and refused the application.
She said: “It is considered that the accommodation provided is small and cramped which would not allow a good standard of living for future occupants.”
