Bay reach last four in Cox Cup

Herne Bay have reached the semi-final of the Kent County Cox Cup for the second year running and will play on finals day at Folkestone next month.

Bay played St Lawrence in the Divisional final on a neutral green at Ashford Rail and in a close match, came out on top with wins on both rinks played.

Terry Kelly, Shaun Woolford, Paul Woolford and Grant Allen won 20-15, while David Mason, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly truimphed 17-14.

Meanwhile, Bay secured second place in the Forest of Blean League with a 15-shot win in their final game at Whitstable. Whitstable 92 Herne Bay 107 Len Brown, Paul Evans, Brian Dennis lost 21-12; David Knight, Bob Day, Brian Gisby won 23-13; Richie Callanan, Roy Chillingwo­rth, Bill Robb won 22-8; Bill Gibbon, Ray Chipperfie­ld, Ian Robb lost 16-14; Bob Baldwin, Stuart Emert, Grant Allen drew 18-18; Colin Hadlow, Alf Collar, Jim Watson won 18-16.

Bay secured all eight league points in the East Kent Mixed Triples League fixture with Cliftonvil­le, winning all six triples and by 87 shots. Herne Bay 150 Cliftonvil­le 63 Sylvia Sweeting, David Knight, Sara Trotter won 23-6; Colin Hadlow, Joyce Whitlock, Colin Holder won 23-12; Edie Nicholls, Tony Rowson, Stuart Emert won 20-12; Mary Watson, Paul Evans, Brian Dennis won 30-13; Cath Watson, Eunice Holder, Jim Watson won 33-9; Lyn Phillips, Ray Chipperfie­ld, Bill Robb won 21-11.

The club again scored an East Kent Mixed Triples League victory, this time at Canterbury, winning by six shots overall. Canterbury 93 Herne Bay 99 Ray Chipperfie­ld, Ronnie Phillips, Paul Evans lost 21-11; Sylvia Sweeting, Diane Wiltshire, Brian Gisby won 22-16; Val Miller, John Phillips, Len Brown won 17-11; Mary Watson, Tony Ackland, Brian Dennis won 27-10; Edie Nicholls, Alan Day, Stuart Emert lost 20-7; Marianne Offer, David Knight, Sara Trotter drew 15-15.

Nine-year-old Logan Robb played his first game for Bay in the home match with Bexleyheat­h & Barnehurst as Bay won by 38 shots. Herne Bay 127 Bexleyheat­h and Barnehurst 89 Logan Robb, Dave Stuart, Lyn Phillips, Alan Kent lost 22-12; John Dryland, Steve Caruth, David Parker, Jeff Graham won 29-9; Paul Green, Cliff Norris, Paul Reddock, Jim Covill won 31-17; John Grogan, Al Burt, Vicky Lewis, Bill Robb won 18-10; Mike Head, Alan Jordan, John Toms lost 18-16; Ted Milton, Danny Keleghar, Derek Hewett won 21-13. Prosser and J Chase, ahead of runners-up P Evans, Steph Flower and N Gore.

Plate winners were B Meadows, Barbara Franklin and J Harris over Trish Guest, J Wimble-roberts and A Walker. New Addingtion were edged out by two shots at Whitstable. The previous day, Barham edged to a narrow win away to River in a friendly. Canterbury won through by four shots after a tight game against Milton Regis.
