Legg leads the way in basement battle

Richard Legg top scored with 72 as Whitstable 2nds beat Dartford 2nds by four wickets in the 2nd XI Premier Division on Saturday. The opener shared in a stand of 95 for the second wicket with Scott Dale (45) before Julian Thompson’s 28 helped see Whitstable to their target of 174 with nine balls to spare. Dale had earlier taken 3-24 from 10 overs and Andy Bennett 3-22 in 7.1 as the home side were dismissed for 173. The win was Whitstable’s third of the campaign and although they remain next bottom, they have a 36-point advantage over basement side Dartford. Canterbury 2nds had fellow strugglers HSBC 2nds 60-7 in Division 1 when the match at Polo Farm was abandoned due to rain. There were two wickets each for Sam Curd, Arshad Haroon and Max Harris. Canterbury are third from bottom but lead HSBC, who are immediatel­y below them, by 51 points. Leaders St Lawrence and Highland Court 2nds were well poised in their Division 3 clash with Sibton Park 2nds when the weather intervened there. Alex Day (85), Lewis Jenkins (62), Tom Shaw (43) and Toby Vaughan (35) all contribute­d to the St Lawrence total of 254-5 and in reply, Sibton were 49-2 in 15.3 overs when the covers came on. Saints head the table 40 points clear of Sidcup. Chestfield 2nds won by five wickets over bottom club Catford Wanderers in Division 4 after dismissing their hosts for 155. The win kept them in second spot 17 points behind leaders Bexley.
