A reckless van driver put lives at risk by ploughing through the barriers on a level crossing as a train approached.

One safety barrier was ripped from its hinge and the other damaged as the motorist careered across the tracks in Sturry.

A signaller alerted police and transport officers were quickly sent to the scene, stopping other vehicles from using the crossing.

Two trains were also held before later being allowed to pass slowly through the village.

Engineers were called out to fix the barriers, which were in the process of lowering when they were struck.

An investigation has been launched by British Transport Police, who are searching for the driver and appealing for witnesses to the incident at 11.10pm on Tuesday.

A Network Rail spokesman said the crossing reopened at 1.30am.

He added: “We are sorry for any delays that passengers and road users may have experienced on Tuesday evening following this disruptive and costly example of dangerous driving.

“We are working with British Transport Police to help identify the driver.

“In the meantime, we would like to remind all road users that level crossings are there to keep you safe and to please obey the lights and warning signs.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call 0800 405040 or text 61016.

Two days later British Transport Police returned to Sturry railway station following reports a gang of youths were being disruptive on a train.

The group were escorted from the station at 5.30pm, with officers remaining there to prevent any further trouble.
