Foster beaten in quarter-finals

Peter Foster was narrowly beaten in the national under-25 quarter finals but has another chance of glory in the men’s singles next week.

Canterbury ladies were beaten 161-106 by the club’s men in the annual Belmore Cup.

The ladies won on one rink, drew on one but lost on the other six.

The two captains’ teams played each other with the men winning 26-8. Canterbury men 161 Canterbury ladies 106 Brian Wheeler (captain), Dave Rickard and Malcolm Nicholson beat June Baker (captain), Rosemary Wheeler and Christiane De Weduwe 26-8; Peter Cole, Roger Blissett and Dave Todd beat Pat Vaughan, Val Lundin and Carole Nelson 20-7; Duncan Ellis, Roger Gowan and Colin Goldsack. lost to Shiela Holden, Sandra Swann and Christie Bar 15-14; Peter Fawcett, Mick Doyle and Bernard Woodhams drew with Liz Long, Gale Hone and Bim Bishop 18-18; John Cananur, Maj Lloyd and Michael Hutchinson beat Kay Lloyd, Barbara Grundy and Sue Mates 18-7; Barry Dilnot, Bill Hillman and Dave Swann beat Maureen Aitkin, Junko Lord and Sally Blissett 16-13; Mansell Jagger, Tim Woods and Mervyn Gulvin beat Alison Mc Donald, Jenny Wilkinson and Marion Patmore 21-16; Hugh Lundin, Damien Hone and Brian Nicholson beat Vivien Piggot, Heather Goldsack and Maureen Dilnot 28-10.

Sixteen teams took part in the annual men’s drawn pairs competitio­n on a round-robin basis, playing three games each.

Two teams won all three games, with Rod Hummel and Bryan Nicholson coming out on top after a countback on ends.
