FA CUP ROUND-UP: Town clinch late winner

FAVERSHAM AND HERNE BAY MAKE IT THROUGH TO FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND

-

Faversham booked a bumper home tie with Tonbridge Angels in the FA Cup first qualifying round after a 2-1 win over Croydon in Tuesday night’s preliminary round replay.

Renford Tenyue mised an early header while Simon Overland was equal to Bradley Wilson’s effort at the other end before Sam Lawford put the hosts ahead after 18 minutes.

Lawford was denied a second before Eiden Fejzi levelled with a fine strike after 34 minutes but the tie was settled nine minutes from time when the ball went into the net off keeper Alex Hewitt’s leg as he tried to cut-out a low cross from Sam Bewick.

The teams had played out a goalless draw in front of a sparse crowd in south London on Saturday.

Mark Lovell went close with a couple of headers for Town but the only real save either keeper had to make was a flying effort from Overland to keep out a longrange effort from Matt Weller in the second half.

Herne Bay also progressed to ensure a home date with Walton Casuals in the next round after beating Chessington & Hook 2-1 on Sunday.

In a game put back a day due to the town’s Air Show, Bay should have taken the lead inside two minutes when Kingsley Aikhionbare made a good run down the left before crossing to Josh Wisson who fired just wide.

Ben Hunter denied a George

Isaacs header at the other end and Bay went straight up the other end and opened the scoring on seven minutes as Aikhionbare fired the ball home with a bicycle kick after Jono Richardson had headed against the bar.

Bay were given a scare on 35 minutes when Chessington forward Robbie Ellis shot over from 10 yards but six minutes later they doubled their lead when Tom Carlton’s corner found Richardson to flick home.

Aikhionbare almost made it 3-0 but Josh Wyatt in the Chessington goal saved well at his feet and the second half was only a minute old when Cameron Petters halved the deficit after easing through the Bay defence to slot past Hunter.

Carlton saw appeals for a penalty waved away while Harry Miller shot over from 10 yards out in the closing stages.

Bay beat Ashford United 2-0 in the first round of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup on Tuesday night to set up a second round tie at home to Margate.

After a goalless first half which Bay edged, the hosts went ahead when Bradley Schafer fired in a shot from the edge of the box with 20 minutes left.

The clincher arrived with 10 minutes left when Miller fed a great ball through to Jake Embery whose shot gave the Ashford keeper no chance. SOUTHERN COUNTIES EAST LEAGUE
