John King, Sue Close and Tony Dobson joined forces to win Canterbury BC’S Dickens Trophy – the only one of 16 teams to win all three of their games.

Alan Cornfoot won through in the preliminar­y round of the National Senior Singles, coming from 11-5 down to level at 17-17 before winning 21-17.

However, he went down 21-11 in the next round.

In the National Pairs, Cornfoot joined Steve Wells to take on the side from Nottingham­shire and despite a comeback from 10 shots down, they missed out on the final end with a measure going against them as they lost 21-20.

Canterbury’s men won by 20 shots against Minster. Canterbury 108 Minster 88 Barry Jordan, Bob Keen, Maj Lloyd won 21-18; Mike Doyle, Roger Gowan, Bernard Woodhams lost 21-8; Keith Wright, Dave Jenkins, Ian Burton won 22-9; John Smith, Alan Burnap, Dick Mortley won 15-14; Simon Willis, Alan Marsh, Bill Hudson won 22-8; Don Parry, Dave Rickard, Dave Swann won 20-18.

Canterbury enjoyed another 38-shot win against Deal. Canterbury 99 Deal 61 Peter Fawcett, Russell Feast, Bill Hillman won 20-9; John Smith, Keith Wright, Bernard Woodhams drew 15-15; Alan Pack, Mike Doyle, Dave Charlton lost 20-18; Tom Nelson, Brian Wheeler, Ian Burton won 24-5; Andrew Burton, Dave Rickard, Bryan Nicholson won 22-12.

Canterbury ladies lost two of the three rinks against Kearsney but returned a draw. Canterbury 59 Kearsney 59 Liz Long, Val Lundin, Carole Nelson won 29-13; Sandra Swann, June Mitchell, Sue Close lost 24-13; Sheila Holden, Jane Carey-harris, Christiane De Weduwe lost 22-17. R.cordell, Sheila Howard, K.neame won 26-6; M.woodward, G.ashurst, G.wills won 27-6; B.storey, P.evans, Jude Prosser lost 16-11; Steph Flower, E.bowyer, S.gibbons won 16-8; T.guest, J.graham, Janet Wimble won 15-13.

Faversham ladies defeated Boughton by 19 shots. Faversham 56 Boughton 37 Chris Lamb, Jo Wimble-roberts, Janet Wimble won 15-14; Trish Guest, Elaine Hinkly, Barbara Franklin lost 15-10; D.mitchell, Linda Abbitt, Jude Prosser won 31-8. Pring, Jim Westcott, Malcolm Scott lost 26-12; Trevor Hall, Reg Dowell, Stan Robinson, Derek Gann lost 24-17; Peter Boeg, Brian Batchelor, Paul Fincham, Norman Tilley lost 30-9.

The previous day, visiting Deal won by 13 shots at Whitstable after winning four of the six rinks. Whitstable 83 Deal 96 Brian Reynolds, Reg Dowell, Derek Newell won 16-10; Brian Watson, Brian Batchelor, Ronald Vaz won 21-18; Trevor Hall, Dino Fella, Gerry Hender lost 18-17; Tony Petts, Norman Tilley, Stan Robinson lost 14-12; Gareth Porter, Chris Twyman, Don Minnett lost 15-10; Alan Reid, Ken Gillmore, Malcolm Scott lost 21-7.

A third defeat came against Hesketh Park who split the six mixed rinks but won by 12 shots overall.
