Marlowe friends take a step back

The committee of the Marlowe Friends is stepping down in the wake of the theatre becoming a self-supporting business.

Over the last 25 years, the group has raised more than £200,000 but members say it now needs to be put on a professional footing.

The theatre has announced it is becoming a trust, no longer supported by the city council.

Director Mark Everett said the Friends committee agreed at its annual meeting in June to dissolve at the end of this December.

He said: “We are hugely grateful to June Brewer and the rest of the committee for their support and loyalty over 25 years, and in particular, the last few years as the new theatre was being planned and developed.

“As we move forward, change is inevitable, and we are developing different ways of supporting our 14,000 Marlowe Friends, and enhancing their membership benefits.”

Mr Everett said the committee’s remaining funds will go towards the cost of a new merchandise stand in theatre foyer.

“It will be ready in time for the opening of the National Theatre’s War Horse on September 15, and will be yet another lasting reminder of all that the committee achieved,” he said.

Over the years, the committee put on shows and theatre excursions for its many supporters but Mrs Brewer hopes the latter can continue with the setting up of the new Silver Phoenix Travel Club.

It is hope the club will con- tinue theatre visits and short breaks and says initial interest is encouraging.

People on the Friends’ mailing list will be invited to join the new club but anyone else interested can email June Brewer at june. brewer@yahoo.co.uk or write to her at Copthorne, 23 Tyndale Park, Herne Bay CT6 6BP, giving full contact details.
