Diners get a taste for digital revamp

Mcdonald’s reopens after £1m overhaul

Over 1,000 customers poured into Mcdonald’s in St George’s Street after a £1 million pound digital revamp.

The restaurant, which closed on July 17, was opened by the Lord Mayor on Thursday. The crowd were told by Cllr Rosemary Doyle to enjoy what was a “fine restaurant,” before cutting the ribbon to allow the hungry hordes a chance to sample what was new.

The makeover sees little change to the decor, instead eight new touch-screen interactive menus align the walls, allowing staff to make all orders from scratch.

The menus allow for customers to pick what meal they wish, or even to design their own custom burger, before food is brought to them.

Banishing the need for long queues, the system feeds directly into the kitchen, where more man power will be dedicated to cooking the burgers from scratch.

The move will make the store “more efficient and more modern,” according to a Mcdonald’s spokesman.

By midday over 1,000 orders had been placed, with the majority wanting to take advantage of the new system, according to one member of staff.

The stall member added: “There are some issues we have to get used to, like table service, but we knew today was a big day and wanted to hit the ground running.

“Once the food is made we make it all from scratch, so we need to be as quick as possible.”

The new system will be rolled out to the Sturry Road branch next February, leading to a sixweek closure for work to be carried out.
