Play in invitation day cut short by the wet weather

-

Canterbury hosted their annual Ladies’ Invitation Day. The event was supported by 44 ladies, comprising 22 members and 22 guests from 15 different clubs. The format was a fourball betterball on full handicap. Unfortunately, the weather forecast came true and the rain came. The first two groups managed to complete the 18 holes after which the decision was taken to close the course. All 11 teams had managed to play nine holes and prizes were awarded based on those scores. Results: 1st prize: Cath Smith and Chris Murray (Faversham) 25 points; 2nd: Jacklyn Barons and Jacqui Luetchford (Ashford) 24 points – on countback; 3rd: Diane Florence and Caroline Stubbs (Walmer & Kingsdown) Longest drive: Emma Irvine (RCP); Nearest the pin: Chris Murray (Faversham). Canterbury ladies are through to the quarter-finals of the Annodata National Knockout after beating Norfolk opponents Costessey Park 4½-½ on Saturday. The hosts were sent on their way in style by six-handicap Alison Kingston who, despite having to concede 13 shots, coasted home by 5&3. Gillian Soutar, playing off 15, was giving five strokes and that helped her opponent to secure a half. Next out was 20-handicap Jack Barons and although her opponent was in receipt of four strokes, it only delayed another Canterbury win, by 3&2. Fifteen-handicap Amanda Pilbeam was also conceding four strokes but she had her game well under control by the time she arrived at the 16th, where she closed out the contest and produced the match-winning victory. Charged with the responsibility of going out last was Lizza Berry and although the result had already been decided, the 15-handicapper demonstrated that the team’s fate would have been in safe hands by beating her rival, receiving two strokes, 3&2. Canterbury now move forward into the quarterfinals. EAST KENT LEAGUE Division 1
