Town pull off Cup shock
Faversham
Two-goal Mark Lovell fired Faversham to FA Cup glory against Tonbridge Angels at Salters Lane on Saturday.
Lovell led the way as the Lilywhites deservedly knocked out Bostik Premier Tonbridge, who also missed a late penalty, in the first qualifying round.
It was a display full of determination from Ray Turner’s side, sprinkled with quality – most notably from Danny Walder, who provided three assists for the hosts in the 3-1 win.
Faversham took just seven minutes to set the tone – and banish memories of their shock Bank Holiday Monday home defeat to Herne Bay – as Walder’s corner was met by Lovell, whose header proved too good for Angels keeper Jon Henly.
Faversham drafted in Carl Rook to play centre-back against his former club and he enjoyed a good battle with Tonbridge’s front pairing of Nathan Elder and Andre Mccollin.
The latter nearly claimed an equaliser for Tonbridge on 22 minutes but his left-foot shot from 20 yards came back off the inside of the upright.
Faversham doubled their lead on 30 minutes with a goal of stunning quality. From midway inside his own half, Walder sprayed a first-time pass inside Tonbridge left-back Jey Siva and Lovell didn’t need to break stride before firing beyond Henly to make it 2- 0.
It was game on seven minutes later as the lively Mccollin pulled one back, while keeper Simon Overland denied Joe Turner just before the break.
Chris Kinnear and Turner went close early in the second half but a Faversham corner was only halfcleared and when Walder delivered another pin-point cross into the box, the unmarked Matt Bourne powered home a header to make it 3-1. Alex Akrofi had a glorious chance to set up a grandstand finish with 12 minutes left but saw his penalty, awarded for a push in the box, brilliantly saved by Overland.
On Tuesday night, a much-changed Town bowed out of the Kent Senior Cup as Bola Dawodu returned to Salters Lane to haunt his former side with a 93rd-minute winner.
Sittingbourne started brightly in the drizzle and took the lead on 12 minutes when Gil Carvalho converted David Smith’s cross past former Brickies keeper Simon Overland. Faversham equalised on the half hour with a 25-yard freekick from Kyron Lightfoot which found the top corner. With penalties looming, however, a corner arrived at the far post where Dawodu fired home to book a trip to Dover in the next round. BOSTIK SOUTH
