Juniors’ set-up has new look
Indoor cricket
Six months’ competitive indoor cricket at the Kent Academy began on Saturday when teenagers opened the Canterbury Pharon League programme, writes Alan Bensted.
Five teams, all from Kent League clubs, have entered the under-15s’ league which runs until November 25
League matches will be completed on October 14 and a week later a cup competition – with sides ranked according to final league positons – will start at 9am and finish at 2pm.
For the first time, for the last five Saturdays there will be a handicap competition based on run rates from league games.
First winners of the season were Chestfield, who beat St Lawrence & Highland Court by 42 runs.
Batting first, Chestfield did not lose a wicket until the 10th over (out of 12). With Ben CarpenterFriend carrying his bat for 27 and his opening partner Alfred Duggan making 24, they totalled 98-4. Fin Mcgrath was 17 not out.
Although St Lawrence lost only three wicketrs, they could not match Chestfield’s run rate and closed on 56
he ever-powerful Broadstairs cracked 187-2 against Whitstable, plosers by 117 runs.
All Broadstairs’ batsmen reached double figures, top scorer being Tom Marshall (32).

The senior league starts on Sunday, September 24, when fixtres are being arranged to prevent so many late night finishes. Results: Chestfield 98-4 (B. Carpenter-friend 27not, A. Duggan 24, F. Mcgrath 17not); St Lawrence & Highland Court 56-3 (C. Tiucker 15, S. Apps 12). Chestfield won by 42 runs. Broadstairs 187-2 (T. Marshall 32, H. Leach 28not, G. Kidd 23, R.
