GOLF ROUND-UP: TUCKER FAMILY TO THE FORE IN WHITSTABLE AND SEASALTER’S FINALS WEEKEND

Finals weekend at Whitstable & Seasalter GC saw eight contests played over three days – the culminatio­n of knock-out competitio­ns played throughout the year.

The first final was the ladies’ singles, played for the Seasalter Trophy, which was contested by Louise Tucker and Janet Henley.

Tucker only dropped a handful of shots meaning despite a spirited comeback from Henley, she managed a 5&4 win.

The Richard Gremo knockout for juniors saw Louise Tucker’s son Jack (handicap 6) and Oscar Girling (h14) play some fantastic golf.

Tucker proved just too strong for Girling and claimed the trophy for the fourth time.

The Stanley Cup, contested by non-husband and wife mixed pairings, teed-off at the crack of dawn on the Saturday and was won 3&2 by Mary King and Jack Dale.

Runners- up were the new pairing of Mel Bashford and Callum Buchanan.

The Veteran’s Putter saw Neil Hacksall play a steady round to beat club secretary John Stokes.

The first match out on Sunday was the main men’s competitio­n,

The Captain’s Prize, which had a final played over 36 holes contested by two of the previous day’s runners- up, Callum Buchanan and John Stokes.

Both players played well and the match remained close Sunny Roxburgh with Broome Park lady captain Alison Doe

throughout. Buchanan, playing off 10, was one-up after 18 and stayed ahead to finally win on 34th hole and become the first junior and youngest ever winner of the competitio­n.

The Seasalter Cup pitted club captain Gary Morgan against Gerry Allan who played superbly to become a deserving winner.

The Jubilee Rosebowl for ladies’ pairs was almost a re-run of last year’s final with three of the same four featuring again.

Helen Foad and Louise Tucker got off to a flying start and although they battled back, Judy Butcher and Pat Bensted went going down 4&3.

The Klein Cup for husband and wife pairings was the final match and one of the closest. Sheila and Mick Wyles won again with Vilma and Alec Parrett a close second.

Whitstable & Seasalter also hosted The Seven Club Shield on Friday,

Nearly 50 players took part in high winds and heavy rain but a high standard of play was maintained resulting in a close finish.

The overall winners of the Shield were Faversham who pipped North Foreland into second by one point.

Nearest-the-pin on the fourth hole was Tony Faunch of Chestfield while nearest-the-pin in two on the 16th was Ken Isaac of St Augustines.

Longest drive on the 17th and best individual score both went to Graham Fry of North Foreland.

Prizes were presented by Whitstable & Seasalter Old Salts captain David Atkins.

Judith Jefferson was top of the ladies at Canterbury GC.

Playing off a handicap of 22, with six pars, Jefferson scored a net 66 in the September Medal which resulted in having her handicap cut by two.

Leading in Division 1 was Lizza Berry (h15) with a net 71, followed by Cath Smith (h19) a shot back.

Second, behind Jefferson, in Division 2 was Maxine Field (h23) wi t h a net 71.

The winner of Division 3 was Pat Askham (h29) scoring a net 78, one behind her was Elizabeth Carlotti (h32).

The nine-hole competitio­n that runs as a Stableford after the 18 hole medal was won by Sue Allan with 33 points, followed a point behind by Kathleen Taylor.

The weekend Medal was won by Angela Le Breton (h27) with a net 72. Jacqui Mount (h12) came second with the same score, one ahead of Lizza Berry (h15) a shot back.

Broome Park Ladies played a 27-hole medal competitio­n for the Miki Elliott Salver, a trophy donated to the club in 1983 by the club’s late, second lady captain.

The winner was Sunny Roxburgh who collected her third major win of the season with an overall net score of 114.

Playing off a handicap of 20, Roxburgh had a net 77 for the first 18 holes plus 37 in the afternoon.

Second and third were decided on countback on the last nine holes with Julia Macdonald (h22) carding a net 80 in the morning but a superb net 35 in the afternoon to finish as runner-up ahead of Sylvia Beacham (h13) who had a net 76 and 39.
