Late goals seal victories

FA Vase

-

Canterbury City will travel to Westfield in the second round of the FA Vase after winning a seven-goal thriller at home to K Sports on Saturday.

The visitors, who play in Division 1 of the Southern Counties East League, took the lead on 10 minutes when Jason Long scored with a rocket from 30 yards.

Canterbury piled on the pressure and they were level on the half-hour.

Dave Pilcher launched a free-kick into the box and Laurence Harvey stabbed the ball home from closerange.

Two minutes later, Gary Mickelborough rounded the keeper and cut the ball back for Sam Conlon to make it 2-1.

K Sports rallied in the second half although it took them until 11 minutes from time to level again.

Tyla Clements delivered the ball from the left and there was Sam Read to volley home at the far post.

Tom Walmsley came off the bench for City and he combined well with Conlon to set up Pilcher for a low shot into the far corner.

But the visitors still weren’t done and when Liam Dawson headed home from a corner, it was 3-3.

With the tie in stoppagetime, Canterbury came up with a dramatic winner, Harvey stopping to head in Darren Marsden’s fizzing cross.

There was also a late winner at Saltdean, where Whitstable scored in extratime to sink the Sussex side 1- 0.

Dan Eason was only called upon to make one save, while the Oystermen went close through Charlie Smith and Ricky Freeman.

Smith then had a goal disallowed and Whitstable had Stuart West sent off but Scott Porter’s side won it when Josh Burchell’s freekick was headed home by Ashley Brown.
