Point a poor return for efforts

Canterbury ladies

Sarah Kerly scored a stunning goal as Canterbury Ladies wound-up the first half of the Investec National League Premier Division season with a 1-1 home draw against Leicester on Saturday.

Kerly’s superb 47th-minute strike cancelled out Rachel Mack’s first-half effort for the visitors although joint skipper Helen Fagg admitted Canterbury were disappointed not to have won.

They restricted Leicester to one penalty corner throughout and almost won it when a fantastic diving deflection from Paris Gasson missed the post by millimetres.

Keeper Fagg said: “Our performance was quite good especially in the second half when some of our link-up play was excellent. I only had one or two touches which shows you how we played.

“We created plenty of chances and felt we deserved the three points but the ball just would men’s hockey Premier Division

Mack’s 14th-minute opener for Leicester came slightly against the run of play but Canterbury stuck to their guns and were rewarded when Kerly scored a goal of the season contender.

The joint skipper burst past three challenges before producing a reverse stick shot from the top of the D which flew into the top left hand corner.

She said: “Points wise we’re a bit disappointed with where we are but a couple of wins can make all the difference.

“The (mid-season) break has probably come at a bad time for us because performances have been improving and we would have liked to have carried on the momentum.

“The one thing I would say is that our away performances need to improve in the second half of the season.”

The outdoor season resumes in February and in the meantime Canterbury will switch their focus to the Jaffa Super 6 indoor championships, starting with the first round on Sunday, December 16.

The second tournament is in early January with the finals at the Copperbox Arena on January 28.

The break did not appear to do Canterbury much good as they conceded twce more before Dunn scored her first before half-time.

Canterbury reshuffled during the break and were much better for it. Dunn struck twice more to cut the deficit to one but they were unable to find an equaliser.
