Bay see off Lilywhites in Boxing Day battle
Bostik South
Herne Bay came away with the bragging rights over Faversham after their 3-1 Boxing Day derby success at Winch’s Field.
Junior Aikhionbare scored a double and Connor Wilkins struck from a free-kick to give the hosts a comfortable win.
Ashley Miller did get a consolation for Faversham but it came in the 90th minute and was too late to make a difference.
The away side again had problems in naming a full squad and had just three available substitutes.
Bay started the brighter of the teams and Aikhionbare nearly scored an early goal but a good save from Simon Overland denied him.
Aikhionbare did get his goal, in the 26th minute, after he turned home a good cross.
Bay continued their dominance and Connor Wilkins added a second shortly before half-time.
Miller had the best chance of the first half for Faversham in the 36th minute but his shot from 20 yards out went just wide.
The game was then put well beyond Town in the 52nd minute when Aikhionbare added his second, although Miller did get a goal for Faversham in the 90th minute.
The result leaves Herne Bay 11th in the table on 36 points, while Faversham are down 18th on 29 points.
It was not all celebrations for Bay over the festive period, though, as they had lost Saturday’s match Chipstead, 3- 0.
Leon Lalor-dell opened the scoring on the 12th minute and Bay struggled to find a way through.
Chipstead’s young goalkeeper was tested in the first minutes of the match from a Nassim Dukali shot but not troubled after that.
Bay enjoyed long spells of possession but did not convert this into goals.
As they were chasing the game, Lalor-dell added his second goal nine minutes from time with Dean Lodge adding a third late on.
Next up for Bay is a home game with Hastings United on Saturday before they travel to Hythe Town on New Year’s Day.
Town’s other Christmas game also ended in disappointment, a 1- 0 defeat to Walton Casuals on Saturday.
In their final home match of the year, they faced a tough test against promotion-chasing Walton Casuals.
The only goal came from Alex Kelly in the second half and that was enough to give the visitors the three points.
Faversham travel to second-placed Cray Wanderers on Saturday.
This is followed by a home clash with second-from-bottom Ashford United on New Year’s Day. against
