Canterbury Golf Club enjoyed a healthy turn-out for their traditional captains’ drive-in on Sunday.

Leading the way was incoming club captain Steven Eeles, who takes over from Neil Parsonson.

Hillingdon-born Eeles, 51, arrived in Canterbury at the age of 12 when his parents moved to Sturry.

He attended Sturry Secondary School (now Spires) and had a keen interest in most sports although cricket was his favourite and he went on to play for Sturry, Bridge, Street End and Canterbury.

He joined the golf club in 2000, where he now plays off a 10 handicap and has been a regular member of the club’s successful East Kent Evening League team.

His wife, Catherine, is also a Canterbury member and the couple have two grown-up children.

Steve works for the Metric Group, who design and develop ticket systems for the public transport industry, where he is the head of field service.

New lady captain is Eileen Wagget. She succeeds Marianne Disneur.

Wagget hails from Gateshead and spent 30 years in the North East, working in the Civil Service before becoming a full-time mother.

A move to Nonington was shortlived when her husband, Malcolm’s work with HSBC took the couple to Hyderabad, India.

The couple returned to England in 2006 and both joined Canterbury GC a year later.

A golfer for more than 20 years, Eileen plays off a handicap of 19.

David Le Breton is the new seniors’ captain, succeeding Vince Stribbling.

Born and raised in Jersey, Le Breton and his wife, Angela, and two children moved to Canterbury from Twickenham in 1987, when he resigned his post as lecturer in marketing and management at Kingston Polytechnic and City University to become head of business and management and assistant principal at Canterbury College.

A club cricketer in Jersey and for Twickenham CC, Le Breton also played squash for Richmond and, arriving in Canterbury, he joined the local squash club and the golf club, where he plays off a 19 handicap, often featuring in mixed events with Mrs Le Breton.

Owen Fagg became this year’s junior captain a few days short of his 16th birthday.

He started attending Sunday roll-up golf lessons at the age of seven and joined the club’s junior section aged 12, winning a scholarship in 2015.

From an initial handicap of 27, Owen now plays off 10, and has represented Kent at under-16 level. Diane Plommer and Jenny Rutherford were winners of the Canterbury ladies section Winter Cups for the second year in a row. The pair finished on 33 points in the competition played over 15 holes. In second place were Peggy Ferrett and Diane Florence on 28 points and third place went to Catherine Hinds and Cath Smith with 27 points. The ladies nine hole qualifying Stableford was won by Valerie Lucas with 18 points. Second was Alyson Wreford with 16 points and third went to Ann White with 14 points.
