Canterbury ladies ‘ They have home advantage and their fitness is always up there’

- By Josh Fordham

Canterbury Ladies Hockey Club joint captain Helen Fagg is expecting a tough match in their first game back in the Investec Women’s Premier Division after the winter break.

Fagg’s side travel to Bristol on Saturday to face Clifton Robinsons after a two-month break from fixtures.

Canterbury find themselves bottom of the table but can close the gap on teams above them with a win.

Fagg said: “It is always a tough game against Clifton Robinsons. They have home advantage and their fitness is always up there.

“I think the table is pretty close. It is all quite close at the bottom.

“We drew a few games in the first half of the season so need to be turning some of those into wins now.

“We are just thinking about the game itself and not the table. It’s not productive to be worrying about it too much.” Canterbury were unbeaten in their last four matches before the fixtures stopped.

In the indoor league, the side missed out on qualifying for the Jaffa Super6s finals day but are now eager to get the outdoor matches back up and running.

Fagg said: “We are looking forward to it. The indoor league is a different game and is good for the fitness.

“The outdoor squad are looking forward to getting back together and back on the pitch.

“We have had a few friendlies to get us ready for our first game back in Bristol.

“There are both positives and negatives to having the winter break.

“Towards the end of the first half of the season we finished with some good performances but some of the players like to rest over the winter and have a break.”

Canterbury will have a new addition to call on after midfielder Penny Squibb joined until the end of the season after flying over from Perth in Australia.

Fagg added: “We trained with her on Tuesday and she’s a strong player and will be a good asset to the team.”
