City to share with Faversham

-

Canterbury City will groundshare with Faversham Town for the 2018/19 season.

Following a meeting of the Faversham board of directors, they have agreed to let Canterbury share their Salters Lane ground.

New Town chairman, Paul Bennett, said: “While we are happy to welcome Canterbury City to our ground during their time of need, Faversham Town FC will receive a financial boost which will help to continue the good work and further development which started at the club last year.”

Canterbury have been sharing with Deal Town this season, which is the sixth venue they have played at since re-forming.

The club also expect the planning application for a new ground, as part of the Quinn Estates Highland Court proposal, to be submitted in spring 2018.

Canterbury City chairman, Tim Clark, said: “We have had an enjoyable season at Deal Town and they couldn’t have been a more hospitable landlord and made us feel welcome.

“However, the opportunity to groundshare at Faversham Town (subject to both Bostik South and Southern Counties East League approval) has arisen and being only 15 minutes from Canterbury, it is a fantastic opportunity to get close to the city we represent.

“We hope it also sends out a strong message that we are heading home.

“We have the means we need to build our own ground and if the City of Canterbury as a whole gets behind the planning proposal, there is no reason why, after 20 years, Canterbury City FC, could not be playing senior football out of their own ground again by 2019.”

Canterbury extended their unbeaten run in the league to six matches after a 1-0 win at home to Corinthian.

Darren Marsden scored the goal nine minutes from the end of the match to make it four wins from their last six as their rise up the table continues.

They are 10th – 10 points off leaders Sevenoaks Town.

Last night (Wednesday) they were due to play their Kent Reliance Senior Trophy quarter-final against SC Thamesmead. On Saturday they travel to Croydon Athletic. Whitstable Town closed the gap on the leaders after a 4-2 win at Croydon Athletic, with Danny Williams scoring a hat-trick.

Town were 1-0 up within eight minutes when Chris Saunders headed home. The lead was doubled a minute later by Williams after he pounced on Ricky Freeman’s parried shot.

Croydon’s best chance of the first half came 15 minutes before half-time when Emanuel Oloyede hit the bar.

The home side got themselves back into the game on 62 minutes when Luis Medina headed home from a corner to make it 2-1.

However, within five minutes of their goal, the game was over when Williams scored his second and third of the game.

Croydon goalkeeper Francis Ameyaw blocked Williams’ first shot but he managed to find the net with his rebound to make it 3-1.

The result was then put beyond doubt in the 66th minute when he claimed his hat-trick after going through on goal and lifting the ball over the g keeper.

Medina did add his second of the game two minutes from time but by this time the points were Whitstable’s.

Town were also able to bring on Shaun Welford near the end of the game after a long injury lay-off.

The win sees them fourth on 42 points and they host bottom of the table Hollands & Blair on Saturday.

Last night (Wednesday) Whitstable were due to take on Erith Town in the quarter-finals of the Kent Reliance Senior Trophy.
