Ladies hold their nerve to claim narrow victory

Whitstable’s Oyster Indoor Bowls Club’s ladies’ team had a narrow Kent League win against Sevenoaks despite only winning two of their rinks.

The score was tight going into final stages with Oyster getting enough shots to win 106-101. Rink details Pauline Hogston, Margaret Dance, Janet Whitbread, Hilary Avis won 18-10; Ann Moon, Barbara Gordon, Jan Poynter, Jacqueline Harvey lost 19-14; Sylvia Sweeting, Janet Pamphilon, Madelene Mcconomy, Yvonne Gambrill lost 17-14; Beverley Sculz, Alison Mcdonald, Penny Perkins, Janet Drewitt lost 18-17; Sheila Bartholome­w, Gloria Clark, Dawn Harris, Eunice Holder lost 21-19; Christiann­e de Weduwe, Sheila Tibby, Barbara Mcgillicud­dy, Sue Swan won 24-16.

The men had two Kent League matches, the first at home to Swale losing on two rinks but winning overall by the narrow margin of 110-109 to give them eight points. Rink details: Maurice Odell, Noel Henry, Peter Boeg, Brian Gentle lost 22-13; Peter Hogston, David Appleton, Bob James, Ian Burton won 22-14; Colin Chapman, David Newell, Phil Scott-martin, Brian Gambrill won 22-15; Gordon Hayes, Paul Drane, Ron Clee, Brian Watson won 29-9; Norman Bourner, David Charlton, Eddie Swan, Roger Benneworth won 21-14; Peter Mann, Fred Goodger, John Good, John Day lost 35-3.

The final league game was away to Ashford, where the Oyster only managed one rink win, losing overall 155-76 to take just one point.
