Valuable win tonic for firsts

Herne Bay

-

Herne Bay men’s 1sts moved off the bottom of Kent Division 1 after a 1-0 win at home Sevenoaks 3rds. Bay had only won once in their last nine matches and were in desperate need of three points if they had any hope of avoiding relegation. While Herne Bay retained possession well, there was no cutting edge to their play in the first. The first half was most notable for the tireless running from Sam Thompson who had the thankless task of playing as the lone striker. Half-time arrived with the teams failing to find the net. In the second-half, the midfield of Kristoff White, Sammy Watson and Tom Rees really got at the Oaks. Bay were now on top and deservedly took the lead. A flowing move, starting with Sean Lunn at right back, saw the ball transferred to the left. A good interchange between Michael Lunn and Adam Jones saw the latter cross for David Jeays to arrive unmarked to score a tap in. Sevenoaks tried to respond and had a decent period in the second half without really testing Wigington’s reflexes and the match finished 1-0 to Bay. The 2nds stay top of Kent Premier A after a 3-0 win at Folkestone Optimist 3rds. Paul Mcvey scored twice with one for Lee Gardiner on their way to the win. Bay are one point ahead of Sevenoaks at the top with a visit from New Beccehamian 2nds. The 3rds were on the receiving end of a 2-0 defeat to Canterbury Griffins. Bay are still second in the Kent Premier C after the loss to the top side but are now four points behind Griffins. The men’s 4ths kept up the pace with the leaders in Kent Division 3 after a win at home to Folkestone 7ths. Ash Horwell scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory. The ladies 1sts were on the receiving end of a 4-0 defeat to Kent Women’s Division 1 leaders Blackheath and Elthamians 2nds. In Division 3, the 2nds lost 2-1 to Tunbridge Wells while the 3rds suffered an 8-0 defeat to Blackheath and Elthamians 3rds in Division 4.
