Squibb’s impact immediate

Canterbury ladies

-

Canterbury Ladies’ new signing Penny Squibb scored on her debut to earn her side a point in the Investec Women’s Hockey Premier Division.

They had a trip to Bristol to face Clifton Robinsons in the first match after the winter break in the outdoor league.

The game began with a quick scoring opportunity for Canterbury who were unfortunate not to take the lead.

Canterbury continued to press hard, putting Clifton’s defence under pressure. This was rewarded with a slick team goal deflected in by Squibb.

They then reset and held the Clifton attack for the rest of the first half.

Unfortunately, Clifton’s Hannah Coulson levelled the score line shortly after half-time with a strike from the top of the D.

Canterbury played well but could not secure the winning goal despite several short corners with the match finishing 1-1.

They remain bottom of the table but are unbeaten in four and travel to leaders Surbiton on Saturday.

The 2nds moved up to fourth in the East Hockey League Premier Division after a 4-2 win against Sevenoaks 2nds.

An early short corner was saved but Lizzie Jenkins made an impressive trap and flicked it over the keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Canterbury came out strongly at the turnaround with Alice Brett scoring two goals in three minutes.

With five minutes to go, Sevenoaks found another gear, slotting two away from close range but Canterbury got another in the final moments.

The 2As are top of Division 2 South East by eight points after another victory.

All three of their goals came in the first half as they were comfortable winners against Brentwood. The 3rds had a 5-0 win against bottom of the table Bromley and Beckenham 3rds. Jen Chapman scored two early goals and one by Alice Dunn saw them go in at half-time 3-0 up.

Dunn got her second and one from sophie Stonier gave them the comfortable win. Canterbury are 11th in the Kent Premier Division.

In Division 2, the 3As had a hardfought 3-2 win against Ashford 3rds.

They maintained fourth place in the table and are 11 points behind the leaders.

There was also an 8-2 win for the over35s vets against Horsham in the Investec Women’s over-35s cup.
