Huge thanks for festive donations

- Sheila Cragg Chairman, The Lord Mayor of Canterbury’s Christmas Gift Fund

In recent weeks we have distributed, in the name of the Lord Mayor, 500 grocery parcels and £3,000 worth of gift vouchers for some children and young people living within our Canterbury community. Each year we need to raise about £15,000 in the space of a few weeks.

As ever, we have been touched by the letters of thanks sent to us from many of those who have received a gift.

We rely on financial support from many individuals and local companies in enabling us to “function”. We collected £250 from shoppers at the New Dover Road Park and Ride site on December 1 and then were set to collect again on December 8 with the help of the Canterbury Salvation Army Band and the Canterbury Ladies’ and Girls’ choirs. On that occasion, sadly, we were rained off within the first hour – along with all the performers – but not before we had been given a further £187.63.

Next Monday, on Christmas Eve, we shall hold the customary open-air Carols in Rose Square at 6.15pm.

Let’s hope that the weather is kinder to us all then. Do come along and join in the fun – it is a great way to begin the Christmas holiday – and you will have the chance to help us replenish our coffers through the retiring collection

Have a happy Christmas – knowing that you will have helped to make Christmas a little bit happier for many of our neighbours, who may be finding life difficult at this festive time and, just as importantly, you will have let them know that they have not been forgotten.
