Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club

Members of Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club dressed in their costumes as Santa’s helpers to greet children from the Avenue Nursery and Forest School, Herne Bay and escort them through the tree-lined Grotto at Canterbury Garden Centre, Herne, to see Father Christmas.

All the children had brought letters they had written to drop into his post box and each child had a chat with Father Christmas and received a gift. Then there was just enough time to enjoy a drink and a cake and explore the magical Christmas decorations before catching the bus back to school.

All the children were wearing their reflective jackets, also funded by a donation from the Lions, in order to improve visibility and safety whenever the children are out and about.

Lions’ President Mike Shaw declared it was a delight to see the children’s faces, and reminded everyone that there was still time for families to visit Father Christmas, too, saying: “The Grotto will be open each weekend until December 23, between 10.30am and 4pm on Saturdays and 10.30am and 3.30pm on Sundays. The Lions are most grateful to everyone at Canterbury Garden Centre, Herne, who have made it possible for us to greet families and old friends who come to visit Father Christmas.”

The Lions sponsored two Junior Schools in Whitstable and Herne Bay earlier this year with an opportunity to join a new youth programme called ROAR which challenges children to develop ideas that could change the world and make a positive impact on the planet. The Lions have teamed up with a young IT company, 7billionideas, which put together the innovative ideas competition for Key Stage 2 pupils, now in its second year. The winning team from Joy Lane Primary School travelled to represent their school in the South East finals of The ROAR2018 competition final in December, at The Millennium Seed Bank in Wakehurst Place. Members of the Lions were there to support them and congratulated them on their design for an ECO Tap, which would prevent wasting water and conserve reserves. David Harkin and his colleagues from 7billionideas were there to host and run the proceedings and praised the children for the ingenuity and scope of their designs, saying they were quite remarkable.

Every one of the schoolchildren taking part received a Certificate and a Medal as a memento of their contribution to a very interesting and inspiring day.

Rotary Club of Canterbury

A red-letter day at our Tuesday meeting, honoured as we were by the visit of our indefatigable Assistant District Governor, Hilary Brian.

The speaker, Aby Evans, a community banker with Natwest gripped the attention of all present as she revealed the difference between scams, pfishing and fraud and how to deal with nuisance telephone calls, emails and supposed workmen at the front door.

The statistics are worrying : over 50% of people over the age of 65 have been victim of one kind or another of the above.

However, help is at hand : Natwest - the first highstreet bank to offer a home service to give advice on such problems to the housebound - is a partner of Friends Against Scams, a National Trading Standards initiative (www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk), while Aby can be contacted by email at abigail.evans@natwest.com
