Coarse angling

- By Paul Mercer

After a wet and cold couple of days the weather improved for the 2018 Canterbury & District Angling Association’s Christmas Shield held on Sunday at Cottington lakes in Deal. Twenty four anglers were at the 8am draw held in the cafe and fishing on Black Lake for silver fish was from 9.30am to 3pm. Alan Smith lifted this year’s shield with 18lb 5oz of mostly skimmer bream, with fish to 2lb 8oz. Second-placed Steve Foreman, like the winner, also fished with a pole to land 15lb, ahead of third- placed Ian Ritchie with 13lb 11oz. The rain of the previous day made the fishing harder than normal. Trevor Lee was narrowly behind Ritchie, with another good weight of 13lb 5oz, to finish fourth despite Black Lake’s very cold water. Adam Matthews secured another top junior win with 6oz in this latest competition. It has been quiet across the CDAA’S waters and anglers attending Stonar Lake have reduced in numbers and catches reported have dropped accordingly, although a few small carp and bream have been landed along with a surprising number of eels. Mark Maddison caught a 10lb 8oz common carp and bream to 4lb 8oz along with a small eel for a typical catch for this time of the year from the popular Sandwich still water. With 20 bream to 4lb to his name, Dave Winter also hooked nine eels to 1lb. Another haul of nine eels, this time including slightly better fish to 2lb, was reported by Brian Malyn. He also banked a 1lb 4oz tench and 23 bream to 4lb 8oz. Two more good eels were caught from Stonar and Clinton Phillips’ brace included a fine fish of 4lb as well as an 11lb common carp and quality bream to 8lb. Clive Phillips hooked bream to 5lb and Bob Fisher and Ian Phipp more bream to 4lb with Phipp also banking an 8lb common carp. Following on from his recent success at Stonar, Ian Frost bagged up again on his most recent visit, this time finishing with 18 bream to 4lb. Common carp to 10lb 8oz were coaxed by Les Hodder and Jason Baird, while Alan Plant continued his Stonar successes this time landing six bream to 4lb 14oz and four carp culminating in a lively 16lb 3oz mirror. flick which released Phillip for the game’s only goal on eight minutes. Phillip picked up the ball on halfway and ran through the heart of the Glebe midfield, twisting his way into the box before beating two more challenges to fire home. It was Max Fitzgerald’s late challenge on Grant that led to the Glebe man’s red card in the 22nd minute, after which the visitors sat deep and looked to counter. That gave City the chance to dominate possession and they could have had the game wrapped up by half-time, with Jordan Casey seeing his snap shot turned aside by Glebe keeper Justus Owuso who also pawed away a Jordan Casey effort at his near post. Grant could have finished the game with a hat-trick, seeing one effort hit the post, two others cleared off the line or blocked, and another disallowed for offside. Casey had a low first-time shot brilliantly saved at point blank range by Owuso and even in stoppage time City went close as Ollie Lee hit a low shot which Owuso half-stopped only for a retreating defender to produce a last-ditch clearance as the ball rolled towards the goal line. City’s second league win in succession left them 11th in the Southern Counties East Premier Division ahead of Saturday’s trip to lowly Hollands & Blair. Defender Laurence Harvey is expected to be fit having come off against Glebe with an ankle injury, while young striker Leroy Hlabi, on loan from Gillingham, should also be fit after missing last weekend.
