Canterbury Historical & Archaeological Society Meetings are held in the Newton Lecture theatre Ng03, Canterbury Christ Church University, starting at 7pm, except where indicated differently.
Canterbury Photographic Society On a previous occasion, Commercial Photographer, Chris Lee, presented images that he takes for a living. He could be commissioned to jet off to somewhere exotic to shoot for a holiday or cruise brochure, or take a call to shoot a new range of furniture, a vintage watch collection, corporate portraiture or a even a Power Station. The presentation Chris gave to members this time was based on images he ‘takes for fun’ when he’s not getting paid to shoot a product or location or models. In addition to loving fast cars Chris is a keen runner. He has taken part in the three Peak Challenge which included Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon and completed in an amazing time of 20hrs. When he’s not racing against the clock he will happily stop along the way to capture the scene before him if the conditions provide perfect light and composition but stressed that he can walk for miles and not take a single image if nothing really grabs his attention. He particularly likes lone trees and dramatic skies and many of his landscapes taken previously on film but more recently digitally are processed in monochrome. He enjoys architectural images and experiments with various lens filters creating an infrared appearance or an ethereal dreamy image. He showed a wide variety of images including motor racing, landscapes, architecture and portraiture and had many tales to share about his various encounters along the way. The second half of the evening was dedicated to his trip to New York and a series of these images were shown as an audio visual presentation including some taken from a helicopter ride. Chris was happy to answer the many questions from members and will hopefully return in the future with more advice on how to shoot product photography. If you’d like to come along to a meeting with a view to join the group or as a guest if something on our programme appeals to you, you will be made to feel very welcome. Herne Bay Photographic Club Dramatic panoramas changing from day into night were the treat for the club this week. David Jenner was the guest speaker, who, during the first part of the evening, showed how he created these masterpieces. A relative newcomer to photography, only starting in 2010, David quickly found that landscape was his favourite subject, but he had a desire to create something more original. He decided to capture one scene that told a whole story. So, on a trip to Southwold, David set about taking hundreds of images throughout the day, and then undertook the laborious task of stitching them together and blending the colours to create a seamless journey from daytime to the night. The files for David’s first attempt had 60 layers, with images taken at 1/2000th of a second through to 60 seconds. The final file size was a whopping 2.5GB. David has undertaken on one major project a year since then, and has since refined the process. After the break David showed some of his images that had won competitions. He also talked about his many attempts to get a photo into the Countryfile calendar. By the end of the evening, David had the whole room in stitches through constant references to his “battle” with John Craven. It was an excellent evening; amazing photos, and a very entertaining narrative. February 19, we continue with our Scavenger Hunt, a just-for-fun digital competition, with a prize at the end, provided by our judge Di Long LRPS CPAGB. February 26, we will be welcoming Isle of Thanet (IOT) Photographic Society for a friendly, inter-club competition. This will be the first time we will be meeting IOT, so we are really looking forward to it. The Club welcomes new members, young and not so young, experienced and newbies to the hobby. Come along and meet us on a Tuesday evening at the Beacon Centre, Sea Street, 8-10pm (doors open at 7.45pm). It costs £2 on the door. If you join, Membership will be £25 (reduced from £35, for the second half of the season). All under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Rough Common and Harbledown Gardeners’ Association The President of the Association , Chris Anderson, chaired the well attended first meeting of the Association in 2019 on February 7 and announced a change in the chairman as Jean Byers was standing down and her place as chairman would be taken by Ann Chadwick. This was proposed by Teresa Hanky and seconded by Sandy Stokes. Jean would continue to write reports for the Kentish Gazette and the Parish magazine and give her 10 monthly gardening tips. Chris also announced that Ann Overy was on the committee but this had been omitted at the last meeting. The speaker for the evening was Jo Arnell who used excellent slides to accompany her talk entitled “Unusual and Attractive Vegetables.” She started by saying that all vegetables require the same environment and can be grown anywhere in the garden- even in the front garden. Her slides showed raised and divided beds with well defined paths between them. She talked about and showed slides of bright crimson broad bean flowers, red lettuces, blue potatoes, red and white striped beetroot, black tomatoes, unusual shaped melons, squashes and pumpkins. She grew vegetables in amongst flowers such as Marigolds and Morning Glory. The talk ended with pictures of unusual vegetables grown in containers, crop protection with netting and a summary of polyculture. Dave Piltcher gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the appreciative audience. After the refreshments interval the new Chairman read out the scores for the monthly competitions. Top scores in each section were:- 10 points to Chris Anderson in the home made/grown section for his trough of small blue Irises. In the flower of the month section 9 points were awarded to Ann Chadwick for her white Christmas Rose, Tony Cooke for his Viburnum, Dave Piltcher for his pink Christmas Rose and Gill Smith for her Heather. Ann Richards gave the treasurer’s report outlining the bills that came in at the end of the calendar year. She thanked the members for the flowers and fruits sent to her when she was unwell. A card of thanks she sent to the Association was put on display. She had collected members’ annual subscriptions of £7.50 earlier in the evening. Jean Byers gave ten tips for March gardening and mentioned the closure of the Post Office in the village hall. Sandy Stokes has informed the chairman of the Village Hall Committee as no official notice had been sent to the villagers. Ann Overy gave out the raffle prizes. The chairman drew members’ attention to the programme of the year’s meetings now on display in the hall and notice boards in Rough Common, Harbledown and Upper Harbledown. The next meeting is March 7, 7.30pm, Rough Common Village Hall when Mick Lynn will talk about “Bee Keeping”. For more details contact the chairman, Ann Chadwick 01227 766608.
Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Members of Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club visited Canterbury Garden Centre, Herne, to thank all the staff for their donation of £1,000 to the good causes the Lions support. The Lions had provided a team of helpers for the Garden Centre’s Christmas Grotto, to ensure that Father Christmas was there with his helpers every weekend in the weeks before Christmas to welcome young visitors and their families. Lions’ President Mike Shaw presented Paul Donaghy, Deputy Manager, with a certificate in recognition of their generous donation. The Garden Centre have supported the Lions for many years, inviting them to their Family Fun Days too, which run through the school holidays. Visitors often discover a large Lion sitting with the children at the Lions Craft tables, where he always makes lots of new friends. Mike Shaw commented, ‘’We are most grateful for this donation. It will help us to respond to requests for support throughout the year. If you know anyone in need, please get in touch. We cannot always help but will certainly do what we can.
