Youngsters impress at Foreland tournament Junior badminton
Canterbury Junior Badminton Club proved their aptitude in developing players, gaining eight winners and runners-up trophies in the North Foreland Junior Restricted Tournament at King Ethelbert School in Westgate. Nine-year-old Daniel Lee was most successful, winning the under-10 singles title with clubmate Aum Bagla runner-up. Lee then teamed up with Hussayn Shiraz to take the under-12s’ doubles title. Bagla and his partner Andrew Duhawna were runners-up in the under10s’ doubles. Max Siddle, Arthur Winter, Sam Stretch and Daniel Padfield were young entries in the under-14 section and performed with credit. In the older age groups, George Kurian was runner-up in the boys’ under-16 singles, narrowly missing out on the runners-up spot in the under-18 doubles with his partner Austin George by one point. Sehez Singh partnered newcomer Clay Gravett in the under-16s and both showed great promise for the future. The partnership of Evie Siddle and Martha Trapp is developing, they were runners up in the girls’ under-18 category, while Amy Stretch and Sophie Hollands acquitted themselves well in the under-16 category. Canterbury Juniors had 16 entries in the tournament and all participants enjoyed the day gaining invaluable experience for the future. Romilly won the under-14 girls’ singles with Ashmitha the runner-up. They then came together to win the doubles. Bibiyan Rai had a hard match against Ben Deery before winning the under-18 boys’ singles. The under-18 boys’ doubles was dominated by Racqueteers, with Charan Ananth and Keir Thomson finishing as runner-ups to Bibiyan Rai and Jakob Kind. Racqueteers secretary, Graham Moore, and Mike Collett, club coach, said that they were pleased and proud of how well the youngsters played.
