HOCKEY Newell nabs five to help set up win Herne Bay HC

Herne Bay Hockey Club enjoyed a good weekend with wins for five of their eight teams, and only two defeats. The star individual performanc­e came from Jay Newell who scored five goals as the men’s 4th team beat Marden Russets 4ths 6-4 away to stay top of Kent Open Division 2. Peter Brundle was the other scorer. The 3rds beat Canterbury Griffins 7-2 at home helped by doubles for man-of-thematch Jake Marsh, Lee Gardiner and Sam Thompson. James Nash got the other. They are ninth in Kent Open Premier B. The first team were pipped 3-2 at home by Canterbury 3rds despite goals from Jamie Mcvey and Luke Hasler. Sammy Watson was manof-the-match as Bay slipped from second to third, behind Canterbury, in Kent Area Division 1. The 2nds remain second in Kent Area Division 2 after a 3-0 away victory over Sevenoaks 4ths. Scorers were Adam Prebble, Kristoff White and man-ofthe-match Tom Salvatori The fifth team drew 3-3 at home to Sevenoaks 8ths, moving them off the bottom of Kent Open Divison 3 on goal difference. Adam Stevens, Ronnie White and Ali Mackinnon were their marksmen. The ladies’ 1sts were beaten 6-1 at home by Sevenoaks 5ths in Kent Division 1 – Amy Mason being both scorer and player-of-the-match – but there were wins for both the 2nds and 3rds. The 2nds beat Maidstone 3rds 4-0 away with goals from player-of-the-match Cat Gilbert, Jemma Edmunds, Georgia Taylor and Bella Daly. The result moved them up to sixth in Kent Division 3. The 3rds also won away, goals from Ruby Collier and Lucie Hayward earning a 2-0 victory over Holcombe 4ths to leave them comfortabl­y out of the bottom two in Kent Division 3. Nicola Holmes was star player.
