Sargeant takes on the best in Vegas Archery VICTORY PUTS CANTERBURY WITHIN SIGHT OF LORD’S Indoor cricket

-

Canterbury archer Bayley Sargeant pushed the top seed all the way when she travelled to Las Vegas to compete in the sport’s largest indoor tournament. Nearly 4,000 archers registered to take part in the 2019 Vegas Shoot, an event which attracts novice to Olympic archers from around the globe and offers $500,000 in prizes and giveaways. Former Canterbury Academy pupil Sargeant was up against 120 competitors from all over the world in the Ladies’ Compound Championship round. The event was shot over three days with each archer shooting a 300 Vegas round each day. Sargeant, who works part-time at the University of Kent sports centre, shot 298 on the Friday and then managed a perfect 300 score on day two, being one of only three British women to achieve a perfect score at Vegas. On Sunday the 20-year-old shot 298, which ranked her 14th overall – a fantastic achievement for her first time at this tournament. The Saturday also saw the finals of the Indoor World Series – an event which takes place over several stages in Nimes, Rome, Luxembourg, and Macau. To make the top 16 and qualify for the finals, points are taken from at least three stages with the final stage being shot at the Vegas shoot on the Friday and Saturday. Sargeant qualified in the top 16 compound women’s competition and shot against the No.1 seed from Korea, So Chaewon, narrowly missing out on the match by just two points to finish ninth overall. Sargeant, who represents Canterbury Archers, is due to start a sports therapy and rehabilitation course at UKC. A Lord’s final is in the offing for the Canterbury club cricketers after an emphatic six-wicket victory over the Essex indoor champions in the county sixa- side play- off at the Kent Academy on Sunday, writes Alan Bensted.

Old Brentwoodians from Alastair Cook country were no match for a vibrant team that has not tasted a Pharon League defeat since the 2016-17 season.

With one notable exception, the visitors’ batsmen could not cope with the assortment of bowling offered by Canterbury’s four-man attack.

Skipper Justin Macvicar, Isaac Dilkes, Max Campbell and Ben Cooper each took a wicket and the batsmen’s poor judgment of runs saw Old Brentwoodians dismissed for 69 in 11.3 overs.

Last out, run out, was Shaz Khan, whose 44 included two sixes off Campbell.

Dilkes took a particularly backstretching catch off the roof from Cooper’s bowling. Then he and Sam Burt opened Canterbury’s innings with a stand of 57 before their retirements on reaching 25.

Stuart Drakeley and Campbell completed the victory in the seventh over. Canterbury now play in the regional finals, again at home, on March 3.

With the respective leaders as dominant as ever, Pharon League (Divisions 2 and 3) results went according to form.

Sheldwich laboured 11.1 overs making 42-5 against Chestfield who needed only 15 balls to get the runs without loss.

Second Division champions opener Ben Carpenter-friend retired on 25.

A similar situation exists in Division 3 where, after bowling out Sturry 2 for 79, Worth hurried home in 7.4 overs.

Biggest total of the day was Faversham’s 136- 4 against Canterbury 3, who replied with 101-4.

UKC 2 beat Reculver by 23 runs and second-placed CCCU 3 boosted their promotion hopes with a four-wicket win over Street End 2.
